The Mission
Our stated purpose is to improve teen driver safety, through education, training, and awareness. There are some major gaps in the basic driver training that is required in order for people to get their drivers license. Altitude’s mission is to fill those gaps with training in the skills they need to be safer drivers, using more qualified driving instructors, and at the same time making the training affordable for everyone who wants it.

Why Altitude?
The Altitude Driver Safety Foundation was born out of a need seen by a retired police officer to improve the statistics relating to teen driving. Having witnessed the results of bad driving too many times, and then as a parent discovering how little training is required for teens to get their license, it was obvious some things had to change.
There are three main issues that it is Altitude’s mission to address:
1. Skills. The basic driver training that is required to get a license doesn’t cover a lot of skills that are desperately needed by new drivers to make them safe on the road. Drivers Ed talks about these skills in the classroom, but doesn’t give them any hands-on experience. Wouldn’t it be better to give teens all the skills they need to be safe drivers?
2. Instructors. The minimum requirement to become a driving instructor in Colorado is that they are at least 21 years old, and have less than 8 points on their license. There is no formal training requirement. So, worst case, your teen could be getting instruction from a 21 year old with 7 points of moving violations on their record, and no actual training. Who do you want teaching your son or daughter?

3. Cost. Driver training is expensive. There are some defensive driving courses available that now cost over $300. When parents have to come up with a large chunk of money for drivers ed and behind-the-wheel, it’s hard to expect them to come up with more to get the training they should have had in the first place.
It is our mission to fix these issues to help our future drivers be better and safer, and to reduce teen driving statistics overall.
Our Defensive Driving and Crash Avoidance course addresses the skills problem, and is priced almost 50% less than the closest competitor. Our instructors are all active or retired police officers, and the best trained and experienced people to teach teens how to avoid situations that result in tickets or crashes. They cost us more to employ, but since we’re a non-profit, we don’t pass that cost onto you.

Accessible and affordable
The idea was to make these courses more accessible by holding them at local high schools in a number of different areas, and more affordable than the typical courses offered by traditional driving schools.
It was determined that the best way to accomplish this was to make these high school courses available through a non-profit, that has the sole focus of driver safety. With that, the Altitude Driver Safety Foundation was created.
Our goal is to partner with school districts throughout Colorado, and anywhere else we can, to get this valuable training to as many young drivers as possible.
